Chapter 17

Talia

“Three days,” I mumbled, staring out the window in my room overlooking Aydencia. I released my grip on the windowsill, walked over to the bed, and collapsed on my back with a groan. My head had not stopped spinning, thinking about the ramifications from everything Raph told me at the academy.

I had tried to keep my mind occupied over the past two days by doing things, but I wasn’t allowed outside anymore, not after Alon found out Adira took me on a tour of the city without his approval. He asked if I would wait until they figured out a way to inform the people about my presence, which in light of the deal I made with Raph, I agreed. So, I had two options: stay in this room all day, which at least had a window, or explore Skyhall. But I still refused to go too deep into the mountain, for fear of it collapsing on me.

Eitan and Adira tried their best to entertain me, but they had their own responsibilities. Eitan let me help him out in the kitchen once, but when his grandmother spotted me, she quickly ushered me out, saying it was no place for a princess.

The sound of knocking filled the room. I didn’t bother moving. The door creaked open, and I lifted my head to drop it again as I saw Adira.

“What’s that?” I asked, referring to the box she had in her hands.

“Something you’re going to hate,” she said. Her footsteps stopped and were replaced with the sound of her setting the box on the table.

I rolled over onto my side and lifted my eyebrows. Adira stood by the box, but she wasn’t in her usual all black. Instead, she fidgeted with a brown leather vest. The tunic underneath was blue, but the vest covered most of it, along with the matching leather shoulder and wrist cuffs. Her entire outfit resembled one of a warrior.

“What’s going on?” I felt my throat constrict.

“Alon has organized a dinner this evening.”

My shoulders relaxed. “And?”

“And he expects you to be present as Princess Talia, per the deal.”

I blew out an audible breath as I fell back on the bed. “Let me guess, inside the box is what I’m supposed to wear?”

She paused. “It’s a dress.”

“I figured.”

This felt too familiar. But I knew it was only a matter of time before Alon would request me to play the part of the lost princess. I was just hoping news of my parents would come first.

“You okay?” she asked, walking closer to me.

“Yeah.” I forced myself to sit up. “What’s the purpose of the dinner?” I asked, lifting my chin toward the box.

“It’s nothing huge. There are a couple of influential people of Aydencia that Alon would like you to meet.” Her tense posture told me there was something else to it.

“Right,” I said, approaching the box.

Adira didn’t respond or convey any more about the dinner. Our friendship had changed since they rescued me from King Madden. She didn’t see me as just Talia anymore.
